Outer Banks Relay for Life

Outer Banks Relay for Life

The OBX has no shortage of great causes to support. This makes it difficult to decide where to contribute your time and money, but it is awesome to see the local community come together to support great ideas.

One of the great causes that jumps out to the forefront each year around this time is Relay for Life. This is a cause that is near and dear to many of us. It is the perfect marriage of fun, love, and money raised for a great cause. If Relay is new to you, here’s a quick explanation from their website:

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Relayers do not have to walk all night, but each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

Check out these quick stats from the 2012 Outer Banks Relay for Life: 429 Participants.  47 Teams.  $140,402 Raised. Impressive, right?! That’s some real money!

This upcoming weekend – 5/19/12 – is Dare County’s Relay For Life carnival! If you haven’t attended in the past, it’ll be worth it for you to drop by and check it out. We’ll be out there rocking our mermaid t-shirts in honor or memory of someone who has battled Cancer. And we hope to see you there. :)
